# Terminology

> Rename seven key words in Elate, such as Visit or Support recipient, so the app speaks the way your organisation does.

Every care organisation has its own words. Some say "clients" where Elate says "support recipients", or "shifts" where Elate says "visits". In **Settings > Terminology** you can rename seven key words, and Elate uses your words for everyone in your organisation.

**Who can do this:** Organisation Owners and Service Provider Admins. The **Terminology** tab is only shown to them.

## The words you can rename

| Elate's word (singular and plural) | What it means |
| - | - |
| Support recipient, Support recipients | People who receive care |
| Team, Teams | Collective name for staff |
| Team member, Team members | An individual staff member |
| Visit, Visits | A scheduled care appointment |
| Carer, Carers | The staff member assigned to a visit |
| Schedule, Schedules | The scheduling calendar |
| Group, Groups | A grouping of recipients and team |

## Rename a word

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open Terminology">
    In Elate on the web, select **Settings** in the sidebar, then the **Terminology** tab.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Type your words">
    Find the word you want to change. Type your word in **Singular**, then the plural form in **Plural**. For example, type "Shift" and "Shifts" against Visit.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Save">
    Select **Save terminology**. Elate shows **Saved.** when your words are stored.
  </Step>
</Steps>

Each box takes up to 80 characters, on a single line.

<Warning>
  Always fill in both boxes. If you change only **Singular**, the **Plural** box keeps the word it already had, so "Shift" would still be paired with "Visits". If you leave a box empty, Elate uses its own word for that box.
</Warning>

<Tip>
  In the middle of a sentence Elate writes your word in lower case. For example, if you rename Group to "Area", the **Add group** button becomes "Add area". Words that rely on capital letters, such as initials, appear in lower case there.
</Tip>

## Go back to Elate's word

<Steps>
  <Step title="Select Reset">
    Next to a word you have changed, select **Reset**. Both boxes go back to Elate's words.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Save">
    Select **Save terminology**.
  </Step>
</Steps>

If you leave the Terminology tab before you save, your unsaved changes are dropped.

## Where your words appear

Once saved, your words appear for everyone in your organisation:

* In the sidebar of Elate on the web: **Schedule**, **Support recipients** and **Team**.
* In page titles, buttons and messages across Elate on the web.
* On the **Groups** and **Schedule** tabs in **Settings**.
* In the permission rows in **Settings > Permissions**, such as **Edit schedule** and **Visit notes**.
* In the Elate Care app. For example, the **People** tab takes your word for support recipients.
* In schedules you share as a PDF or by email.

## What keeps its original wording

Your new words apply to what Elate shows and creates from now on. Notes already written, the audit history and documents already issued keep the words they were written with.

## What you cannot rename

Some names are fixed and do not change with your terminology:

* The other sidebar items: **Dashboard**, **Chat**, **Operations**, **Finance**, **Reports** and **Settings**.
* Role names, such as Care Coordinator or Team Lead.
* **My day** and **My week** in the Elate Care app.
